Getting my old driving wheel working on bazzite

I recently got back into playing Dirt Rally 2.0 and I remembered that I had an old PS2 era driving wheel! Time to delve into the attic and get it set up.

I found it, got it all hooked up to my PC, then booted up Dirt Rally 2.0. Uh oh, it wasn’t seeing the wheel as an input device. At first I thought maybe it’s just too old and not supported but a quick search showed that the driver is included in the linux kernel so that shouldn’t be the issue. I looked around and came across oversteer, a driving wheel manager for Linux. I downloaded the AppImage and ran it. It showed that the inputs were all working correctly. This meant the problem must be between the OS and the game.

As the game was running under proton, I did some more searching and found that some versions of proton had issues with hidraw (Human Interface Device RAW). I also stumbled across the PROTON_ENABLE_HIDRAW environment variable which you can set to a specific device identifier.

To find the device ID, I ran the following command:

$ lsusb | rg -i logitech
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 046d:c294 Logitech, Inc. Driving Force
#                      ^    ^ Device number
#                      | Bus Number

Great! Now I just needed to plug that into the steam launch options for Dirt Rally 2.0

PROTON_ENABLE_HIDRAW=0x046d/0xc294 %command%

Hey presto, the game was now seeing the wheel! I ran the in game calibration tool and then I was “off to the races”.
